A little secret about the folks here at Boca Terry – we are organic obsessed! And with Earth Day (April 22nd) right around the corner, there isn’t a better time to discuss the importance of organic cotton.
While there’s enough news out there already about the importance of eating organic food and using organic cleaning products, we seem to overlook how non-organic clothing can affect our bodies, along with the environment. Regardless of the reason why you choose to go organic in other aspects of your life, it is important to know why organic materials, like cotton, are better than their conventional counterparts.
So, what is organic cotton and why is it different? Organic cotton is produced using methods and materials that minimize the impact on our environment. The main takeaway is that organic cotton uses much less water during production, and contributes to growing systems that replenish and maintain soil fertility and build biologically diverse agriculture. Organic materials are not treated with pesticides, insecticides, herbicides and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). Simply put, if you do not want to eat this stuff, then why would you want to expose your skin to it?
And what are the chances of you not being exposed to such toxins when wearing anything made with cotton? Consider the fact that conventionally grown cotton uses more insecticides than any other crop in the world, and you will realize there is no escaping it. Also consider the fact that skin absorbs anything it comes in contact with. Furthermore, cotton producers use at least 25% of the world’s insecticides and more than 10% of the world’s pesticides. You will also be surprised to learn the non-organic cottons and other fabrics have the potential to irritate skin and cause rashes as well as headaches and dizziness. In sum, the harmful effects of non-organic practices are experienced in every facet of our lives.
Sadly, despite the ample benefits involved, less than 1% of cotton grown is organic. Although it is the appropriate time to discuss the impacts of our industrial systems on the environment, we shouldn’t have to wait until Earth Day to celebrate and remember the importance of protecting our planet.
