Natural Hair Story: Ivy Locs

Natural Hair Story: Ivy Locs

Published on May 21st 2010

How long have you been natural and when did you BC?
I’ve been natural a little over 3 years and 3 months. I transitioned for 7 1/2 months with kinky twists, micro braids, sew-ins and my staple fake puff. I did my own BC February 11,2007 and have never regretted it or looked back since.

What are your staple products and hairstyles?
Right now my staple products are all from Shea Moisture. Its the first full line that I’ve ever used in my life. Its all organic, gives my hair the moisture it needs without stripping it to get it clean.
Specifically Im using the Raw Shea Butter -Moisture Retention Shampoo, Deep Treatment Masque, and the Organic Coconut and Hibiscus Hold and Shine Moisture Mist. In addition I use my own homemade spritz of water and whatever essential oils I feel like using such as peppermint and rosemary.

As far as hairstyles go Im really a freestyle girl at heart. Its one of the reasons I chose locs, specifically sisterlocks. I can just get up and go or even part my hair a different way and add a flower and i get a totally new look without any effort. However when I do style I’d have to say that a loc puff, bun and roller set are my staples.

What are your natural hair goals?
My natural hair goals are to maintain the health of my hair, to keep the integrity of my locs (meaning not having any thinning issues or locs to break off), and to one day take over the retightening of my locs completely!

How do you keep your hair intact overnight?
I cover my locs with a satin bonnet and in case I cant find any of my bonnets, one of my pillows has a satin pillow case on it, so im covered!

How do you maintain length?
You know I see this as a loaded or different question for me since I have locs because I think people often assume that locs automatically equal growth. Just like everyone else If I dont give my locs the TLC it needs its not going to grow. With that being said I maintain length by making sure to keep my scalp clean, my hair moisturized, and by having my locs retightened every 4 to 5 weeks to avoid any integrity issues.

Name 1 reason you went natural and why you love being natural.
The main reason I went natural was because I was tired of the cycle of having to get my hair relaxed. I really woke up one day and wondered why do I “have to” do this and what’s “wrong” with my hair as is.

I heart being a natural woman because in a nutshell for  me it just equals freedom. It’s kind of like my own little slap in the face to society saying “Take that and the heck with YOUR standards of what beauty is, I love me,nappy hair and all!” I love walking down the street and passing another natural woman, giving and receive a smile or nod of mutual respect, its just a natural thing . Overall I love helping other women find the confidence and strength they need when deciding to embark on this journey because I realize its not easy for many of us. After all there were so many great women who helped me find my way so in turn I do the same.
