Natural Hair Story: Kamella

Natural Hair Story: Kamella

How long have you been natural and when did you BC?
I have been natural for almost 1 year and 3 months. I BCed September 29, 2009 after a 7 month transition.

What are your staple products and hairstyles?
My staple products are Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut Conditioner, Herbal Essence Hello Hydration Conditioner, EcoStyler Gel (olive oil), EVOO, and Unrefined Shea Butter. My staple hairstyles are mini twist, chunky twist outs, and straightening (once a month).

What is your regimen?
My regimen is pretty simple. I wash my hair with shampoo every two weeks and generally co-wash during the off week.  I also deep condition every two weeks. This is usually done on dry hair over night or I sit under a hooded dryer for about 20 minutes before rinsing out. I do protein treatment once a month before I straighten. I usually apply leave-in conditioner and seal ends, then put my hair in two cornrows to allow it to stretch and partially dry before beginning to style. That’s about it.

What are your natural hair goals?
My primary goal is to maintain thick healthy hair. My secondary goal is for my hair to be between MBL and WL straighten and around APL in a twist out.

How do you keep your hair intact overnight?
I always cover my hair with a silk scarf or satin bonnet at night. If I’m wearing a twist/braid out I generally re-twist/re-braid nightly. If my hair is straighten, I cross-wrap at night or put in flexi rods.

How do you maintain length?
I always moisturize and seal my ends daily. I am starting to add more protective styles to my regimen.

Name 1 reason you went natural and why you love being natural.
I went natural because I was tired of self relaxing my hair. I love being natural because of the fullness and versatility of my hair.
