Natural Hair Story: Naomi

How long have you been natural and when did you BC?

I have been natural for close to 8 months now, I did the big chop after 8 months of transitioning, I just got tired one day, and decided to just go for it.

What are your staple products and hairstyles?

Staple products for me are oils and conditoners. My favorite oils right now are Home Health Castor Oil, Jamaican, Black Castor Oil, and Africa’s Best Ultimate Oil, I tend to mix all three in an applicator bottle. I’ve gotten so much growth from the mixture! I also like VO5 Moisturizing Milks Strawberries and Cream for cowashing, I also use their Herbal Escapes Free Me Freesia, but as a leave in.

What are your natural hair goals?

I just want healthy, thick, even hair. I want my hair to grow as long as it possibly can, well maybe not past MBL, but we’ll see!

How do you keep your hair intact overnight?

I own both a satin bonnet, and a satin scar, I usually alternate between the two.  I would say my hair is either in plaits, twists, or rods 2/3 times a week, other than that I just toss the bonnet or scarf on, nothing to complicated.

How do you maintain length?

I have started dusting, and not using heat too often. I do a lot of low manipulation styling, and protective, every now and again, so that could be helping with my retaining length.

Name 1 reason you went natural and why you love being natural.

I loved my relaxed hair, but it was badly damaged, To try to combat that, in 2007 I had my hair cut really low, but it to maintain the style meant frequent salon visits, because of how pricey that can be, I decided to self relax, and style at home, using heat. Which caused even more  breakage and heat damage. I originally decided to natural for the health of my hair, but as I learned more methods in caring for it, and styling, I adore it. I  love being able to experiment with my hair, and learning about it’s likes and dislikes, I also love how carefree I can be with my hair, I don’t have to worry about it getting wet, or running from rain! Also, the versatility! I love that I can wear an afro one day, curls another, and also do straight hair when I feel.
