The Loc’D Files: Kellen Daranda

Published on Feb 14th 2011

What is your name and what do you do?
Kellen Daranda, Attorney

How long have you been growing out your locs?
My last hair cut was in Mid-November of 2005, started twisting in early Feb. of 2006

Who is your loctician?
It was Athena Laster at Circle of Peace in Houston, but since I moved to New Orleans, i need one, can u help me out?

What is your regimen for your locs?
I was my hair every 2 weeks, get it done every 4-5 weeks. For day to day, I usually just sea breeze my scalp every 3 days and keep my scalp oiled with a combination of “Doo-Grow” oil and Proclaim olive spray.

Have your locs ever hindered you professionally?
Not sure, in Houston I was self-employed I’ll discover son enough if they’ll hinder me in New Orleans. Usually the people who warn me that I have to cut my hair are brothers and sisters. White people usually love my hair and want to touch it.

Any advice to someone just starting out on their journey
Know your hair and be patient. My hair took 14 months to lock up because of my loose curl pattern, but its all mine, and I love it. When u watch your hair grow it becomes part of you and you love it.
